Emotions in Games

Digital games evoke many different emotions in players. In the literature, emotions are often considered a key component of player experience. So far, research on player experience has focused on the influence of positive emotions on positive experiences, and studies addressing negative emotions are scars. We explore how and when negative and mixed – that is, feeling positive and negative emotions at the same time – emotions may lead to positive player experience. Doing so, we contribute to a more nuanced understanding of emotional spectrum digital games may evoke.
